Smack Swarm Bloom

Back in June 1979 Rick Richards and myself, after the demise of Swan’s Corner, decided to put a band together (of course). I was mere months away from acquiring my Strat, so for now stayed on bass, having not yet sold my Fender Mustang to Jimi Giro. We persuaded drummer Dave Usher and guitarist Paul Quinn to have a go and off we went. The band agreed on the name Jellyfish, as we included the Punilux song of the same name in the set. This line-up played two Saturday lunchtime gigs at the Welly in Middlesbrough. Also in the set, I recall, was “Cool for Cats.” We also played there the following week, but for some reason the drummer this time was John Searle. We also had ex-Punilux guitarist, Malacabala, guesting with us. Not a lot happened after that.
Fast forward 40 years. October 2019, Rick and myself, along with George Stead and Joe Brown, go to see Punishment of Luxury at the Westgarth. Hughie was supposed to have been there as well, but double-booked himself. I had a daft idea, shortly afterwards, to put a Punilux tribute band together. I mentioned this to Rick. He suggested re-forming Jellyfish* and doing just that. We recruited Joe, Hughie and George and managed a couple of promising rehearsals before Hughie threw the towel in. We were just in the process of re-grouping and had started to write some original material when the lockdown happened.
So here we are.
*Regarding the band name. Jellyfish was always favourite. I know there was an American band in the 90’s called Jellyfish. Very good they were too. But we had the name first, and the other band aren’t around anymore, so we were sticking with it. Then I became aware of another band called Jellyfish Boy. So, to avoid confusion, a new name is required. Nobody has come up with a definitive name yet, so for now, we are Smack Swarm Bloom.

7.2.20 update

Just a quick one. Jellyfish did not rehearse this week due to other commitments, however Joe, George and myself (with Rick & Mitch at one point) got together with acoustics upstairs at Unit 10 on 6.2.20 and worked out the chords for Rock the Casbah (the boys were amazed at what that one is about), Psycho Killer, Give the Man a badge (roughly - not sure about this one) and faith Healer.

Jellyfish 2 George 1

On Wednesday 29th, George joined the Jellyfish ranks. Rick was absent, busy elsewhere, so the four of us ran through Puppet Life, Jellyfish and All White Jack. The decision to Broaden our horizons, material-wise was made.

Well, did anyone really believe I would be able to keep it up?

One day!
No matter. I'm here now and that's what counts.

Just a quick update - first Jellyfish rehearsal held at Unit 10 on Wednesday 15th January. Rick, Joe B, Hughie and myself present. We nailed Puppet Life and All White Jack.

More to follow................

2020

I decided about 30 seconds ago that my new year resolution is to post something on this blog every day from now on. Let's see how long THIS lasts.

Here's a brief catch-up, anyway. I'll need to update the gig list because there's one more to go on. But that was it! Ste seems to have sacked his rhythm section without actually doing it. No probs. The next project is bubbling - a Punilux tribute band. Joe B and Hughie are on board. Just need to get George. Rick said he will sing for now, while he finds us a suitable vocalist. Bit of deja vu there.

I'm working through the 2020 remasters. Last chapter of the Charlies, Wine Flies and the misc chapter to do. The way it's looking, 2021 masters would have been more realistic. You never know.

Solo stuff plods on. Soundscapes 2020 has been started. That'll come when it comes.

No sign of the collaboration with Ron as yet. He's busy anyway.

That'll do for now.
